code-de project

Dear CODE-DE and EO-Lab users,

The CODE-DE and EO-Lab platforms will continue to operate for the next few years thanks to secured funding. We would like to give you a brief overview here that could be important for your current or planned use of the platforms.

First of all, we would like to thank you for the numerous responses to our workshops, meetings and online questionnaires. We are pleased to inform you that free quotas of cloud resources are still available and can be requested as usual – with immediate effect, as requested, also on a monthly basis without predefined terms. All CODE-DE and EO-Lab services that you have indicated as important or very important in your feedback to us will continue to be part of the portfolio. This applies, for example, to all cloud resources, BSI certification and EO Cloud Support.

We are only discontinuing a few services that are rarely requested according to the surveys in favor of offers that you have told us you particularly want. Thank you for your suggestions! The following is a brief overview of the most important changes:

  • Extended synergy of the CODE-DE and EO-Lab platforms: The surveys have shown that a significant number of you use or want to use both platforms. That is why we are working on bringing CODE-DE and EO-Lab even closer together. The aim is to be able to switch easily between the two platforms and use the services offered by both. This will make it easier, for example, to make developments in research projects available on CODE-DE for broader use.
  • In the future, there will be a joint newsletter for CODE-DE and EO-Lab. For legal reasons, subscribers to the EO-Lab newsletter must therefore subscribe to this new newsletter. You will find the link to do so below in this announcement. If you are using CODE-DE but have not yet subscribed to the newsletter, we recommend that you register as well.
  • The range of data will be further developed to address the needs you have identified as closely as possible. Examples of this are:
    • EO-Lab will be expanded to include further commercial NewSpace data for scientific use.

    • On CODE-DE, the BKG provides additional RapidEye Germany coverage and high-resolution, high-quality composites (PlanetScope and SPOT) of all of Germany for the years 2020 to 2022.

    • Through synergies with the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE), users of the platforms will soon be able to access data from the Copernicus Contributing Missions (CCM) and Copernicus Services.

    • Sentinel-1 L0 Raw data and MODIS data will no longer be available.

The applications you mentioned as particularly important, such as DataExplorer and JupyterLab, are still available without change. For licensing reasons, the EO Browser and the CODE-DE Data Cube cannot be continued. However, we are working on offering replacements!

Details of the new developments will be presented in a webinar. The date will be announced shortly. Of course, we will also report on the individual new developments in our newsletter. To register, follow this link:

These innovations are a first step. The German Space Agency at the DLR is already preparing the continuation and further development of the platforms beyond 2025. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact the project management at the DLR or the support team at CODE-DE or EO-Lab. As always, we welcome your feedback.

The project managers can be reached at: eo-lab@dlr.de or code-de@dlr.de.
